Nipah Virus Outbreak in Kerala, India

Deadly Virus Transmitted from Animals or Contaminated Food

Symptoms Range from Mild to Severe

Authorities in the southern Indian state of Kerala are on high alert after a 14-year-old boy died from the Nipah virus. The Nipah virus (NiV) is a zoonotic virus that is transmitted from animals to humans, primarily through fruit bats. However, it can also spread through pigs and other animals, or through contaminated food.

Symptoms of a Nipah virus infection range from mild to severe. Some people may experience no symptoms at all, while others may develop fever, cough, headache, and shortness of breath. In severe cases, the infection can lead to encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or death.

There is no specific treatment for a Nipah virus infection. Supportive care is the main treatment, and includes measures to manage symptoms and prevent complications. The best way to protect yourself from infection is to avoid contact with bats and pigs, and to eat only clean, well-cooked food.
